Week 1 NFL Pick’em With Steve And Alison

Thursday didn’t go so well for me, Alison, or CBS’s analysts.  Every single one of us picked the Baltimore Ravens to cover and, well that didn’t turn out great.

However, we got our first sign that Alison is on par with the experts.  Get their picks here.

Let’s take a peek at the rest of our week 1 picks. Every quote is a direct quote.

New England Patriots @ Buffalo Bills (+9.5)

Alison – NE

“Buffalo is a lame city.  Although let me go on the record as saying that my best friend is from Buffalo.”

Me – NE

“This line literally could not be big enough for me to take Buffalo.”

Atlanta Falcons @ New Orleans Saints (-3.5)

Alison – NO

“Morale in New Orleans is up (the city is revived from a horrible disaster not too long ago).  They still have a lot to fight for (they aren’t out of the woods, and sports can help).”

Steve – NO

“Morale in New Orleans is up. (Sean Payton is back) They still have a lot to fight for (they got screwed by the NFL).”

Minnesota Vikings @ Detroit Lions (-5.5)

Alison – Min

“Just a feeling that it’s going to be close, but the Lions will win.”

Steve – Det

“Adrian Peterson can’t possibly repeat what he did last year, and that’s the only way Minny will beat anyone good.”

Oakland Raiders @ Indianapolis Colts (-9.5)

Alison – Oak

“I think the Colts will win, but that seems like a lot.”

“I believe the Colts will regress, but this is a 2 win team they’re playing.”

Tennessee Titans @ Pittsburgh Steelers (-7.5)

Alison – Pit

“I never heard of the Titans before.  I like brand names.”

Steve – Ten

“I think the Titans are solid enough on both sides of the ball to keep this close.”

Kansas City Chiefs @ Jacksonville Jaguars (+3.5)

Alison – Jac

“My mom just moved to Jacksonville! It’s a sign. *pause* Eh, they’re probably gonna lose.”

“I think this one gets a little ugly.  Chiefs have a lot more talent.”

Seattle Seahawks @ Carolina Panthers (+3.5)

Alison – Sea

“I have recently developed an affinity for sea stars.  Seahawks is close enough.”

“Not enough weapons in the passing game for Carolina.  Can’t move the ball in this D or stop the run.”

Cincinnati Bengals @ Chicago Bears (-3.5)

“Bengals win! Cincinnati is a wonderful place for lovers!”

Note: We went to see a Radiohead concert there because it fell on our anniversary.  It was pretty awesome.  We were also in a steakhouse that had a promo event where the Bengals would be your waiters.  Sadly, we missed that.

“Jay Cutler runs for his life all day.”

Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ New York Jets (+3.5)

Alison – TB

“The Jets just aren’t up for the challenge.  I’ve heard about them in the press.”

Steve – TB

“In a game that will test your will to watch, neither team moves the ball well but TB scores the only TDs.”

Miami Dolphins @ Cleveland Browns (-1.5)

Alison – Cle

“I just don’t envision turquoise being celebrated”

Note: Who knew that she knew the Dolphins wore turquoise?

Steve – Cle

“In a battle of two good bad teams, I like the home team here.  Tannehill will be rattled by a much improved Browns pass rush.”

Green Bay Packers @ San Francisco 49ers (-4.5)

Alison – GB

“Joe Namath isn’t there anymore.  I mean Joe Montana! Green Bay will win.”

Note: Two people I would have guessed she had no idea who they are.

Steve – GB

“Packers still reeling from 579 yards.  They’ll settle down on defense and contain the zone-read a lot better.”

Arizona Cardinals @ St. Louis Rams (-4.5)

Alison – Stl

“Uhh, rams are strong.”

Steve – Stl

“Uhh, ditto?”

New York Giants @ Dallas Cowboys (-3.5)

Alison – Dal

“I haven’t even heard anything about the Giants in a while.  I haven’t even seen anyone wearing a jersey.”

Steve – Dal

“I, for reasons I can’t quite elucidate, really like the Cowboys this year.”

Philadelphia Eagles @Washington Redskins (-3.5)

Alison – Phi

“Sometimes I just like being contrarian.”

Steve – Phi

“A little RGIII rust, a little Chip Kelly.”

Houston Texans @ San Diego Chargers (+4.5)

Alison – Hou

“San Diego seems like such a beige city.  I don’t think the crowd will make the team feel incentivised.”

Steve – Hou

“This line seems tiny to me.  Houston is better than San Diego at almost every single position.”

 

There you have it.  Let’s see how she stacks up. I have a sneaky suspicion she’ll do well.
